David Elder Lecture - Dr Christina Mackaill

Cosmic Health - Medicine on the Final Frontier

Dr. Christina Mackaill, NHS/Space Medicine

Space Medicine is a fascinating field that many people have never heard of, but spaceflight gives us an opportunity to understand the human body in this unique environment. In this lecture, Christina will explore some of the surprising ways the body changes in space - from what happens to your bones and muscles, to how astronauts adapt to weightlessness.

She will also discuss the challenges we face as we travel deeper into space, such as living on the Moon or eventually setting foot on Mars. How will radiation, reduced gravity, isolation and the sheer distance from Earth affect human health - and what will we need to do to keep astronauts healthy when help from home is no longer an option?

Join us for a journey from the human body in orbit to the future of human exploration beyond Earth, and discover why medicine may be just as important as rockets in determining how far we can go.
