The Beauty of Maths

During Maths Week Scotland the Community Learning team ran a series of creative workshops for our community groups. This year's theme, The Beauty of Maths, allowed us to explore mathematics and numeracy in very creative ways. We were delighted to be joined by the young people from the community arts organisation, Impact Arts for a workshop on the Fibonacci sequence.​

Impact Arts are a dedicated community art charity working with 16-25 year olds, across Scotland, which uses the arts and creativity to empower and enable social change. The group of 5 young people on their Creative Pathways project used their creative skills and with a simple brief designed colourful panels that make up the wonderful Fibonacci-inspired stained glass exhibit.

What is the Fibonacci sequence?​

The Fibonacci sequence is an interesting series of numbers where the next number in the series is found by adding the two numbers that come before it.​

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144 and so on for infinity!

What is the golden ratio?

The golden ratio, that inspired the final design, results when the ratio of two numbers is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two numbers.

In our artworks, this ratio (1.698) creates a pleasing aesthetic through the balance and harmony it creates.​

The Fibonacci session was really fun and engaging, and we all learnt a lot. Working with others is a very valuable lesson to learn and the group rose admirably to the challenge creating work they are all proud of.
