Empowering the next generation: Holyrood 2026

At Glasgow Science Centre, we believe that everyone – regardless of age, means or ability – should have the opportunity to engage with the wonders of science in ways that matter to them.

From learning about how our bodies work, to understanding the world around us, STEM engagement and lifelong learning can, and does, hold transformative power when it comes to enriching the lives of individuals, and building a stronger, more innovative society. Over the last 25 years, Glasgow Science Centre has engaged with millions of learners across Scotland and beyond; bringing together industry professionals, academic partners and local communities to build Scotland’s STEM Nation.

There are still challenges, though. The poverty attainment gap in education is still all too prevalent, with many people from low-income households, or other marginalised groups, unable to access learning opportunities. Scotland, with its wealth of natural resources and talent, is ideally positioned to capitalise on the new industries and technologies on the horizon – and we need to make sure everyone can benefit. As the nation’s leading science centre, we have been working to support, inspire and grow our future STEM workforce from our unique position within the talent pipeline; connecting cutting-edge research and industry opportunities with future STEM leaders.

Science and discovery centres across Scotland, many of which were built around the turn of the millennium, are also facing significant funding shortfalls and operational setbacks. Aging infrastructure is falling into disrepair, and increasing costs are threatening the future of these institutions and the essential experiences and services they provide. We can still lead the way as a STEM Nation, but now is the time to act to preserve science centres for future generations and boost our impact as part of Scotland’s wider innovation ecosystem.

Our Asks

In line with our charitable mission and strategic aims, we’re calling on the next Scottish Parliament to:

  • Recognise the importance of early and lifelong science learning and engagement
  • Mandate for investment, engagement and dialogue with the public on significant new STEM developments in Scotland – ensuring that science is for everyone.
  • Provide parity for science centres with other cultural institutions, such as museums and art galleries, as a critical part of our STEM Nation
  • Invest in the development and support of the STEM workforce with a holistic industry-led, Scotland-wide approach Invest in the development and support of the STEM workforce with a holistic industry-led, Scotland-wide approach

Scotland is at an inflection point in our quest to become a leading STEM Nation, and Glasgow Science Centre is an economic necessity for this. 2026 brings extensive opportunities for us to channel and maximise the benefits of our science and technology for a smarter, greener, healthier and wealthier Scotland. To achieve this ambitious target, we require a growing STEM literate workforce supported by a society that’s rich in science capital, where our people are engaged and connected through and with science.
