Glasgow Science Centre celebrated three years of STEM learning with OPITO
OPITO, the global safety and skills authority for safety-critical industries, has renewed its partnership with Glasgow Science Centre for a third year to continue funding the delivery of an innovative, renewables-focused education programme.
Delivered as part of OPITO’s My Energy Future initiative, the partnership aims to inspire young people to explore the exciting career opportunities available across the energy sector. The support allows the Science Centre to offer schools across Scotland and the North East of England free access to ‘Learning Lab: Powering the Future,’ giving pupils a hands-on introduction to renewable technologies.
Since the ‘Powering the Future’ Learning Lab began in 2022, over 36,000 school pupils have benefited from the programme, learning about the future of the energy sector and the UK's pathway to Net Zero.
The Learning Lab allows pupils to meet experts from the energy industry, and includes teaching resources aligned with Scottish curriculum outcomes in science, technologies, numeracy, and literacy. The programme is delivered in partnership with Life Science Centre in Newcastle, Science Skills Academy in Highlands, Dundee Science Centre, and Aberdeen Science Centre.
By working together with industry authorities like OPITO, Glasgow Science Centre designs learning programmes with input from energy professionals, that are tailored to the needs of the sector.
Welcoming the renewed partnership, Glasgow Science Centre CEO Dr Stephen Breslin said:
“With the future of Scotland’s energy sector and the energy transition becoming ever more important, I’m delighted to see our valued partnership with OPITO renewed so that we can continue to work together to inspire young minds and support this vital workforce.
“The expertise and collaboration our partnerships provide us with help to ensure that the resources we deliver support industry aims and raise awareness of the breadth of careers available to young people in the UK.”
Stephen Marcos Jones, Chief Executive Officer at OPITO said:
“The energy transition isn’t just about technology – it’s about people. That’s why initiatives like Learning Lab: Powering the Future are so important. By bringing STEM to life in a way that’s hands-on, inspiring and connected to real-world challenges, this programme helps young people see themselves as part of the future energy workforce. We’re proud to continue our partnership with Glasgow Science Centre, empowering the next generation to discover the exciting opportunities that exist across a rapidly evolving sector.”
