Budding space explorers meet NASA experts
400 pupils from 8 of Glasgow’s primary schools were given the chance to meet real-life NASA astronauts and scientists at a special Space School event held in Glasgow Science Centre this week.
The exciting experience was led by NASA Astronaut Doug Wheelock and Deputy Associate Administrator for Space Operations Joel Montalbano, who inspired the pupils with tales of their experiences at NASA, both on Earth and in Space.
The pupils were able to learn about opportunities in Scotland’s growing space sector, while getting to hear first-hand accounts from NASA experts on their careers and pathways into the industry. They were also given time during their visit to explore the three floors of the science centre and get hands-on with the interactive exhibits.
The Space School Day is the 22nd of its kind to be held in Glasgow Science Centre and was organised in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde’s Faculty of Engineering and supported by Glasgow City Council.
Commenting, Glasgow Science Centre’s CEO Dr Stephen Breslin said:
“As a leader in science communication, Glasgow Science Centre plays a key role in bringing government bodies, academic partners and the STEM community together to create opportunities for children in Scotland to learn about and engage with science in a meaningful way.
“Scotland’s Space Industry is taking off – and through organising strategic events like Space School Day, we can help make the sector accessible to young people from all backgrounds, and support Scotland’s future space-workforce.”
