Dancing Raisins

What's this Science Bite all about?

Make a funky raisin disco and learn how fizzy drinks are created with this fun experiment you can try at home or in school.

What you'll need

A drinking glass, some raisins and some carbonated water.

  • 1 drinking glass or clear plastic beaker
  • Some raisins
  • Carbonated (fizzy) water

How to do this experiment

  1. Half fill your glass beaker or cup with the carbonated water.

  2. Drop 3 or 4 raisins into your glass - watch them sink to the bottom.

  3. Watch your raisins carefully for the next few minutes. What do you see happening to them?

    Also look at the bubbles around the bottom of the glass and around the raisins - how are the bubbles affecting the raisins?

Water is made fizzy by dissolving carbon dioxide gas, into the water. We call this carbonated water. When you open a bottle of carbonated water and pour it into a glass, the carbon Dioxide begins to collect together and forms bubbles of the gas. This then rises to the surface of the water and escapes into the air.

These bubbles of gas collect on the rough surface of the raisins. When enough gas has collected on a raisin the buoyancy of the gas will be bigger than the weight of the raisin and it will lift the raisin up. When the raisin reaches the surface the bubbles will escape into the air, and the raisin will fall back to the bottom of the glass again.
